OSEAN’s mission is to research, develop, apply, and disseminate practices in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, in the ORs, and in the world, based on the most advanced interdisciplinary knowledge, ultimately contributing to a more developed society—socially, economically, and environmentally.
The aims and activities to be developed in the Outermost Regions Sustainable Ecosystem for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (OSEAN) research group are as follows:
Considering the scientific areas and fields of intervention, OSEAN, through its fundamental and applied research, aims to create an impact on the community and obtain recognition of excellence, not only from its peers but also from society itself.
OSEAN bases its conduct on the best international scientific practices. It is guided by the following values:
Project Name: Geologically Enhanced NaturE-based Solutions for climate change resiliency of critical water InfraStructure
Description: This topic relates to the Mission’s objectives to mobilize at least 150 regions in testing the solutions locally most needed to build climate resilience and to deliver at least 75 deep demonstrations of systemic transformations to climate resilience. The proposal should develop and test at least one innovative solution, combining technological, social and business innovation, leading to an increase of the resilience and adaptation capacity to climate change in the involved regions and communities of the agriculture sector and the related value chains. Nature based solutions[1] and the restoration of cropland and grassland should be explored as priority and at the very heart of the development whenever possible.
Project Name: Entrepreneurial & Innovative Universities Acceleration Programme
Description: The new ERA is expected to strengthen the R&I dimension of HEIs through a comprehensive institutional Higher Education Transformation Agenda in synergy with the European Education Area, reinforcing their role as drivers of change, fostering their recovery, enabling shared objectives between the EU and Member States’ initiatives to support higher education institutions in their efforts to transform on their education, research, innovation and service to society missions. To deliver on the transformation agenda for HEIs a large-scale concerted action in support of the institutional transformation efforts of HEIs will be required, including a standard methodology to develop roadmaps of EU, national and regional actions and investment measures for institutions or alliances.
Project Name: Innovation Capacity Building for Higher Education in Europe’s Outermost Regions (INCORE)
Description: INCORE boosts innovation and entrepreneurial capacity in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from Europe’s Outermost Regions (ORs). The project will improve the framework conditions for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs, in particular high-tech start-ups) and universities to cooperate and co-create new value, businesses, products and services. The actions will substantially increase the entrepreneurial capacity of the participating universities.
The Outermost Regions Sustainable Ecosystem for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is formed by a network of researchers that acts as a single organic body. From the formulation of propositions, it begins the search for new methodologically demonstrable findings.
